Position Description:

The Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization is accepting applications for the full-time non-exempt position of program coordinator.

Performs difficult professional and responsible administrative work developing, organizing and implementing youth athletic programs; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the RARO Executive Director. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a criminal background check, DMV motor vehicle record check, and drug screening.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:

  • Plans and coordinates RARO youth athletic programs of various age groups and activities; coordinating work with RARO Executive Director, maintains registration databases for all activities; prepares reports to be used in computing joint services information for cities and county;
  • Responsible for primary staff relationship with program committee;
  • Coordinates all field preparation planning, including movement and placement of equipment and painting of fields;
  • Serves as primary coordinator of scheduling part-time employees’ assignments as site supervisors and game administrators;
  • Coordinates and organizes Public Relation events;
  • Assists with clerical, postal and secretarial services as needed;
  • Prepares practice and game schedules for assigned activities;
  • Assists executive director by compiling and recording time sheet information at the end of the each pay period;
  • Assists in scheduling of game officials for RARO activities and local middle schools;
  • Assists executive director in procuring facilities for RARO activities;
  • Coordinates the use of RARO equipment by individuals and outside agencies;
  • Assists in recruiting and training volunteer coaches for assigned sports;
  • Serves as game official and site supervisor as necessary;
  • Receives citizen inquiries or complaints and recommends action or refers to proper person;
  • Performs all additional tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the methods and practices of recreation organization, implementation and organization; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to recreation programs; skill in the use of recreation equipment; knowledge of rules and game administration; ability to plan and supervise the work of full-time and part-time subordinates; ability to coordinate, organize, and supervise public relation events; ability to communicate calmly under great stress and pressure; ability to understand the psyche of children ages 5 to 16.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work or work experience in the field of recreation. Considerable supervisory experience is helpful.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license. Must consent to and successfully complete pre-employment national background screening, drug testing, and Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles driving record check as a condition of employment. Employee may be called outside normal working hours; therefore, employee must possess a cellular or landline phone.

Physical Requirements:

This work ranges from sedentary to heavy, occasionally requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force, frequently requiring 20 to 50 pounds of force to move objects; work requires kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly and quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications. The ability to communicate effectively by telephone is necessary. Visual acuity is required in order to see the obvious and to make visual evaluations of a myriad of activities.

Compensation:

Grade M $19.23--$25.17 per hour dependent on qualifications
