The Utilities Processing Department operates the Water and Wastewater Plants under contract to the Maury Service Authority. It provides service to the City of Lexington and the Rockbridge County Public Service Authority.

Water Treatment Plant

The Water Treatment Plant was completed in 1975. It currently serves approximately 9,000 people in Lexington and Rockbridge County. Operated by a professionally trained and certified staff, the Water Treatment Plant uses advanced filtration and chemical treatment techniques to provide high quality drinking water to city and county consumers. Its existing 3.9 million gallons per day capacity assures that the plant will be adequate to serve the growing needs of the area for many years to come. The Department Director may be contacted at the Water Plant (540) 463-3566.

Wastewater Plant

The Wastewater Treatment Plant is an advanced treatment facility permitted to treat 3 million gallons of wastewater per day. The treatment facility incorporates both total nitrogen and phosphorous reduction processes designed to minimize impact on receiving waters. The MSA plant discharges into the James River Watershed which ultimately empties into the Chesapeake Bay. The Wastewater Plant Supervisor may be contacted at the Wastewater Plant at (540) 463-5936.
