In the Spring of 2021, the City of Lexington won a grant for consultant assistance to create a Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. As a city with two universities and a walkable downtown environment, there is a readymade population eager to take advantage of safer and more comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

Project History

The public was invited to comment during the early development of the plan:

We need your input to make sure we are focusing on the right areas.  Visit https://eprpc.mysocialpinpoint.com/lexington-bicycle-and-pedestrian-plan#/ and use the markers and add comments to give us your input! To leave a comment, drag one of the markers on the top bar anywhere onto the map and a window will pop up for your comment:

  • Desired bike/walk destination: Tell us destinations where you would like to walk or bike more safely and comfortably
  • Desired bike improvement: Tell us about improvements you would like to see for bicycling in the future.  If it is a roadway segment, place your marker anywhere on the road and tell us in the comment where you’d like to see improvements.
  • Desired walk improvement: Tell us about improvements you would like to see for bicycling in the future.  If it is a roadway segment, place your marker anywhere on the road and tell us in the comment where you’d like to see improvements.
  • Safety concern: Tell us if there is safety concern for biking or walking currently that needs to be addressed.

Note that due to local funding expectations, not all suggestions may be feasible to be funded in the near term.

After several months of impressive public input, the online survey was closed in early December 2021. We received many helpful comments which informed the crafting of a final plan. A draft plan was presented to the Planning Commission for review. The presentation took place during the Commission's regularly scheduled meeting on February 10, 2022 and was open to the public.  The final plan was presented to City Council at its regularly scheduled meeting on May 5, 2022.
