Position Description:
The City of Lexington is accepting applications for the non-exempt full-time position of Maintenance Construction Worker I.
This position performs unskilled manual work for a variety of Public Works infrastructure construction, maintenance and repair projects; occasionally operates nonspecialized equipment in connection with manual tasks. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the utility crew supervisor. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a criminal background check, DMV motor vehicle record check, and drug screening.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
- Excavates and grades for utility trenches; installs assorted utility pipe, fittings, and appurtenances; inspects, videos, and cleans gravity sanitary and storm sewer lines; performs water main valve exercising, hydrant exercising, and line flushing services; cleans and clears sanitary and storm sewer structures; installs sanitary sewer degreasers and root inhibitors; and assists with utility line locates. Maintenance/ Construction Workers assigned to the Utility Crew will be tasked with responding to utility emergencies on a twenty-four (24) hour basis;
- Loads and unloads tools, equipment and assorted materials; may operate assorted tools, small engine equipment, and small and large vehicles/ trucks, assists with traffic control set-up and flagging operations; and runs errands and picks up parts and supplies;
- Assists with snow and ice removal;
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse weather conditions; ability to lift heavy articles; general knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance associated with the tools and equipment typically used by Public Works is preferred; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to diplomatically interface with the public; and the ability to foster effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and officials.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to High School graduation or GED.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license. Must consent to and successfully complete pre-employment national background screening, drug testing, and Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles driving record check as a condition of employment. Employee may be called outside normal working hours; therefore, employee must possess a cellular or landline phone.
Physical Requirements:
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work;
the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
