Position Description:
The City of Lexington is accepting applications for the non-exempt full-time position Sanitation Worker I.
This position performs routine semiskilled manual work pertaining to the collection of the City’s solid waste and recyclables. Solid waste consists of residential and commercial trash, bulk items such as furniture and appliances, and yard waste. Operates solid waste and recycle trucking and equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Sanitation Crew supervisor.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
- Collects solid waste and recyclable materials via specified routes and schedule. Recyclables are collected five (5) days per week and solid waste is collected six (6) days per week;
- Lifts collection containers for disposal into applicable sanitation trucks and equipment. Operates load packer compaction mechanism;
- Safely operates sanitation collection trucks and equipment on city streets and public highways. Directs traffic and guides truck operator in congested areas;
- Collects litter and debris on city property and within the city right-of-way;
- Performs pre-route truck and equipment inspections; cleans trucks and equipment after usage; and assists in the performance of preventative maintenance;
- Assists with snow and ice removal;
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse weather conditions; ability to lift heavy articles; general knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance associated with sanitation trucking and equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to diplomatically interface with the public; and the ability to foster effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and officials.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to High School graduation or GED preferred. Some experience in performing heavy manual work and the operation of sanitation related trucking and equipment.
Special Requirements:
Must consent to and successfully complete pre-employment national Background Screening, Drug Testing, and Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Driving Record check as a condition of employment. Employee may be called outside normal working hours; therefore, employee must possess a cellular or landline phone. Valid Virginia driver’s license preferred.
Physical Requirements:
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
